Common Office Design Mistakes to Avoid

Common Office Design Mistakes to Avoid

At Urban 9-5, our mission is to use our unique office furniture to provide you with a rustic, industrial feel in your workplace. Our vintage office décor can be molded into a perfect design no matter your office’s specifications, with everything from desks and storage to office seating considered broadly.

Another big part of our mission? Ensuring that office managers don’t fall into one of several office design pitfalls, which can have more of a negative effect on your business than you might think. Here are a few of these common mistakes, and how to avoid them.

Poor Lighting

You may think going cheap on lighting will save some money both now and in the long run via utility bills, but you might find your business sacrificing far more in productivity as a result. Lighting has shown a proven and pronounced effect on workplace productivity, particularly the kind of lighting that produces varying atmospheres throughout the day. Look for ways to let in natural light, and also supplement with task lighting like reading lamps or wall sconces.

Badly Placed Artwork

Artwork can have a great effect on the office, but if it’s hanging awkwardly or at the wrong height levels, it can have the opposite effect. Look to place artwork between 65 and 70 inches from the floor, depending on the average height of office employees. For anything hanging above a sofa or other furniture, leave between six and eight inches from the bottom of the art to the top of the furniture.

Wrong Paint Color

A good color scheme means colors have to match and complement each other, which includes elements like rugs, window treatments and tables or other furniture to tie it all together. In general, you should choose all these options before selecting your final paint color.

Bad Furniture Proportions

It’s easy to fall in love with one particular furniture piece, even if it’s a little too big or small for your area, but this could be an issue once you get it in the space itself. Make sure you’re very aware of spatial concerns before making a final purchase, and measure precisely if necessary.
